Restricted Uses & AI Functionality
Last updated: November 4, 2026
Section 6 of the Terms applies only to Tavily’s generative AI features, such as generated answers. Search and Extract results with generated answers turned off are not AI Functionality, though the general Terms still apply, including the ban on automated decisions without human oversight in high-risk areas. Reasonable automated API use and building records from results don’t violate the scraping or data-mining restrictions. Don’t rely on Tavily results, especially AI-generated answers, as the basis for investment decisions without your own independent review. You are responsible for keeping sensitive data, such as government IDs, health information, payment card data, and credentials, out of queries. Filter queries in your application and turn on the “PII Restrictions” setting to reduce the risk.
Do Search and Extract (with generated answers off) count as "AI Functionality" under Section 6, so that Sections 6.5–6.7 apply?
No. Section 6 applies to Tavily's generative AI features, such as generated answers. Search and Extract results with generated answers turned off are not AI Functionality. The general rules in our Terms still apply to all results, including the restriction on automated decisions without human oversight in high-risk areas.
Do the AUP and Terms restrictions on scraping, indexing or data mining apply to automated API use or to building records from results?
No. Reasonable use of the Tavily API in line with the Terms, including automated calls and building records from results, is not a violation of applicable law.
Does the Section 6.4 restriction on financial investment decisions apply to ordinary Search/Extract results used for research?
Using Search or Extract results as one input to your research is fine. You must not rely on Tavily's results, and especially AI-generated answers, as the basis for investment decisions without your own independent review and judgment.
What if queries may contain personal or special-category data by accident, and what safeguards does Tavily recommend?
You are responsible for keeping sensitive data out of queries. Tavily's Terms prohibit sending certain sensitive information, including government ID numbers, health information, payment card data, account credentials and special-category personal data, and Tavily isn't designed to process protected health information. To reduce the risk of accidental inclusion, filter queries in your application and turn on the "PII Restrictions" setting.
